Nocturnal, Venomous, and Unwelcome Indoors
Scorpions are nocturnal arachnids known for their clawed pincers and stinger-tipped tails. While they play a role in controlling other pests, their presence inside homes or near living areas poses a real risk—especially for children, pets, and anyone with sting sensitivities. Some species deliver venomous stings that can cause serious medical reactions. At Blackwood Pest Solutions, we offer safe, effective, and region-specific scorpion control designed to eliminate current activity and prevent re-entry into your home or business.
Common Types of Scorpions
Several species of scorpions are found throughout the southwestern U.S., but these are the most common to watch for in and around residential areas:
Arizona Bark Scorpion (Centruroides sculpturatus)
- Most dangerous scorpion in the U.S.—venom can cause serious symptoms
- Light tan with a narrow tail and slender pincers
- Can climb walls and ceilings; often found in bathrooms, closets, and under furniture
- Nocturnal and extremely elusive—can squeeze through gaps as small as 1/16 inch
Stripedtail Scorpion (Vaejovis spinigerus)
- More common but less venomous than bark scorpions
- Tan or brown with two dark stripes along the back
- Prefers dry outdoor areas like rock piles, firewood, and walls
- May wander indoors during extreme heat or rain
Giant Desert Hairy Scorpion (Hadrurus arizonensis)
- Largest scorpion in North America—can grow over 5 inches
- Black top with yellowish legs and large hairy pincers
- Generally not aggressive and rarely found indoors
- Lives in burrows and is more of a desert-dwelling outdoor species
Signs of a Scorpion Problem
- Nighttime sightings around baseboards, tubs, or laundry rooms
- Scorpions under rocks, in shoes, closets, or yard debris
- Shed exoskeletons found near dark, undisturbed areas
- Pets reacting to unseen stings or pawing at corners
- Increased insect activity—scorpions follow prey like crickets, roaches, and spiders
Scorpions are nocturnal, so infestations often go unnoticed until populations rise or someone is stung.
Are Scorpions Dangerous?
Most scorpion stings feel like a bee sting—painful, but not life-threatening. However:
- Bark scorpion stings can cause numbness, vision issues, difficulty breathing, or seizures
- Children, elderly individuals, and those with allergies are at greater risk for severe reactions
- Pets may be stung when stepping on or sniffing scorpions
- A single female can produce dozens of offspring—making early detection critical
Scorpion Prevention Tips
- Seal gaps under doors, around pipes, and between baseboards
- Install weatherstripping and door sweeps
- Reduce outdoor clutter—store firewood and rocks away from the structure
- Trim back overgrown bushes and vegetation touching walls
- Eliminate water sources and pest prey (especially crickets)
- Use yellow outdoor lighting to reduce insect attraction
- Shake out shoes, towels, and bedding in high-risk areas
